Waking Up to God

A Chakra-Kosha Pathway for Spiritual Awakening

Are We Spiritually Asleep?

We live our lives in what appears to be a waking state — making choices, fulfilling responsibilities, engaging with the world. Yet, from a spiritual perspective, this “waking life” can be a form of deep sleep. We are so identified with the body, mind, and ego that we forget our essential nature: pure, divine consciousness — the Self.

In the same way that a dream seems real until we wake up, our day-to-day ego-driven life feels real until we spiritually awaken.

So the question arises:
If we are spiritually asleep, how do we wake up?

Just as we set an alarm before going to bed to wake at a specific time, we can design an inner process — a sacred alarm system — to trigger spiritual awakening. This system is activated through meditation, intention, surrender, and grace, working across our inner architecture: the 7 Chakras and 5 Koshas.

Understanding the Metaphor: Sleep and Awakening

In ordinary sleep:

  • We forget the waking world and enter a dream.
  • An alarm can gently or abruptly rouse us.
  • Once awake, we realize the dream was not reality.

In spiritual sleep:

  • We forget our divine essence and identify with the ego.
  • Meditation and awareness act like an inner alarm.
  • Once awakened, we realize we were never separate from God.

This metaphor becomes the foundation for our spiritual framework. Let us explore how we can consciously prepare to awaken — not randomly, but purposefully — by harmonizing the 7 Chakras and relaxing the 5 Koshas.

The Framework: Preparing for Awakening

1. Set the Alarm — Intention & Ajna Chakra Activation

The first step is setting an intention to awaken. This is the “alarm-setting” stage. We commit to regular meditation, self-inquiry, and contemplation.

Ajna Chakra (Third Eye) governs clarity, focus, and insight.

  • Meditating here is like programming your consciousness to “ring” when it’s time.
  • This is where the resolve to wake up is born.

Koshas Involved:

  • Vijnanamaya Kosha (Wisdom Body): Discerns truth from illusion.
  • Manomaya Kosha (Mind Body): Calms and aligns thought patterns with intention.

2. Ringing the Alarm — Meditation & Witnessing

As we practice meditation, especially focused on Ajna, the inner bell begins to ring. This is the experience of witness consciousness — a detached, observing awareness that watches the mind without being caught in it.

  • This detachment is the first stirrings of awakening.
  • Regularly returning to the witness dissolves layers of false identity.

Koshas Involved:

  • Manomaya Kosha: Learns to release emotional and mental reactions.
  • Pranamaya Kosha (Energy Body): Breath and prana harmonize for deeper stillness.

3. Relaxing in Sleep — Preparing the 5 Koshas

Just as the body must be at ease to fall into deep sleep, our 5 Koshas must be purified and relaxed to allow spiritual awakening. Awakening is not forced — it ripens.

Let’s look at each Kosha and how to relax it:

a. Annamaya Kosha (Physical Body)

  • Prepare through yoga, mindful movement, and relaxation.
  • Stillness of the body prepares the altar for inner presence.

b. Pranamaya Kosha (Energy Body)

  • Use pranayama to unblock energy. Let breath flow unforced.
  • Harmonized energy fields support spiritual conductivity.

c. Manomaya Kosha (Mental-Emotional Body)

  • Release emotional burdens and rest in openness.
  • Let thoughts pass like clouds — no grasping.

d. Vijnanamaya Kosha (Wisdom Body)

  • Let go of dogmas and concepts. Stay open to direct knowing.
  • Deep meditation and inquiry refine inner discrimination.

e. Anandamaya Kosha (Bliss Body)

  • Rest in subtle joy and peace — not excitement, but serenity.
  • This is the threshold of the Self — the quiet before awakening.

4. Expecting to Wake Up — Faith & Sahasrara Chakra

We don’t control awakening. Just as we trust the alarm will wake us, we must hold a sacred expectation — a quiet faith that our inner efforts will be met with grace.

This grace descends through the Sahasrara Chakra — the thousand-petaled lotus above the crown.

  • It cannot be “opened” by will — only by surrender.
  • It opens when the system is ready, the ego softens, and the soul is receptive.

This is the dimension of Grace (Anugraha) — the divine reaching down as we reach up.

5. Awakening — Merging Witness and God

Finally, the moment arrives — not as a dramatic event, but as a quiet realization:
I am not the body, not the mind. I am That.

The alarm rings, and we truly wake up.

  • The witness merges with the witnessed.
  • The drop realizes it was never separate from the ocean.

Living Awake in the World

Spiritual awakening is not the end of life — it is the beginning of true living.
It is to walk through life aware, free, and whole. It is to live with purpose, not just survival; with devotion, not just desire.

  • Set your intention.
  • Relax your layers.
  • Trust the alarm.
  • Expect grace.
  • And when the moment arrives, allow to wake up fully.

For the Self you seek is not far — it is you, waiting to be remembered and realized!
